Anytime is the right time to visit Makongo Hills, where few thrills can beat the encounter with Africa’s Big 5, traditionally those animals who pose the greatest danger to their hunters – lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo and leopard.
Phenomenally wild and beautiful, the defining feature of Makongo Hills is its remoteness. Our 15,000 hectare reserve incorporates a diversity of habitats. In our Acacia woodland area you will find, amongst others, lion, leopards, giraffe and elephant, the thickets are secure spots for the nyala, shy bushbuck and kudu, the grasslands teem with wildebeest, zebra and buffalo; sightings of rhino, cheetah, hyena and other species. Birdlife is abundant throughout.
In addition to the Big 5, we are home to: nyala, impala, bushbuck, grey and red duiker, the elusive kudu, zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, warthog, bush pig, baboons and monkeys, banded mongoose, spotted hyena, brown hyena and a number of smaller cat species, such as genet, caracal and African wild cat.
Our trees and bush are teeming with birdlife. Some of our most sought after species include; Narina Trogon, Gorgeous Bush Shrike, Eastern Nicator and the Pink-throated Twinspot.
The reserve hosts nesting Southern-Bald Ibis.
