Activities

Anytime is the right time to visit Makongo Hills, where few thrills can beat the encounter with Africa’s Big 5, traditionally those animals who pose the greatest danger to their hunters – lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo and leopard.

Our Big 5 Private Game Reserve

Phenomenally wild and beautiful, the defining feature of Makongo Hills is its remoteness. Our 15,000 hectare reserve incorporates a diversity of habitats. In our Acacia woodland area you will find, amongst others, lion, leopards, giraffe and elephant, the thickets are secure spots for the nyala, shy bushbuck and kudu, the grasslands teem with wildebeest, zebra and buffalo; sightings of rhino, cheetah, hyena and other species. Birdlife is abundant throughout.

Game Drives

Explore the varying landscape with our field guides, who have a deep understanding and respect for this precious wilderness area. You will be taken on 2 drives each day in our 4×4 Land Cruiser: An early morning adventure, breaking for tea/coffee and rusks deep in the African bushveld, then back to the lodge for breakfast. An afternoon drive lasting into the evening, with a sundowner at one of our amazing viewpoints and the opportunity to experience nocturnal species and magnificent Zululand skies during the drive back to the Lodge.

Birding

An avian-rich destination, Makongo Hills is home to a myriad of some of the country’s most beloved bird species.

The reserve’s range of diverse habitats; from rolling grassland, riverine sand forest, acacia woodland and extensive riverine cliff faces, makes it an absolute birder’s paradise.
